Some essential oils can be used “neat” or undiluted although many of them require dilution to be used topically. You can see if an oil might need to be diluted by looking at the label on your essential oil bottle. Keep in mind that extra dilution may be required on babies, small children and the elderly. If you are new to essential oils my best advice is to start off low and slow!
Essential oils are super powerful and many times it is necessary to dilute them with a carrier oil before applying. Dilution also allows the oils to spread around more surface area making your bottle of essential oil last longer.
What Is A Carrier Oil and Which One Should I Use?
A carrier oil is a vegetable oil—such as coconut oil, olive oil, almond oil or grapeseed oil—that can be used to dilute essential oils. Young Living’s V-6™ Vegetable Oil Complex is an excellent carrier oil for all applications.
Carrier oils ensure that essential oils applied topically are comfortable to the skin. Dilution with a carrier oil does not dilute the effect of the essential oil. In fact, it prevents waste due to excessive application. Look for dilution ratios on Young Living essential oil bottles.
Vegetable shortening, butter, margarine, or petroleum derivatives (such as mineral oil, baby oil, and petroleum jelly) should never be used as carrier oils.
How Do I Dilute?
As I said above on the back of your essential oil label it will give you dilution ratios, like “Dilute 1 drop with 4 drops V-6 or olive oil”, if that specific essential oil needs to be diluted. You can use a glass dropper and count out the drops of carrier oil or you know me I love a good hack…fill an empty 15ml essential oil bottle with your carrier oil of choice and add a glass dropper top for dilution on the go.
For my kiddos I pre-dilute their favorites in empty bottles and add a roller fitment or some might just call them roller tops or roller balls. This is speed oiling at its finest! This is also one of my favorite ways to apply to my feet.
Need To Dilute More?
If you put on your oil and realize you need more dilution don’t fret…you can simply add more of your carrier oil right on your skin to dilute it more.
